After drawing Laura’s friend Joel (“the basketball fanatic”), I moved on to Thushara, her best friend since secondary school.
While Thushara also used to be a basketball player back in school, I’d already chosen to present Joel as the basketballer. Instead, I conveniently seized on Laura’s description of “still watches Spongebob Squarepants” (note how I take the liberty to assume that this must mean she loves Spongebob :)
Laura also described Thushara as “girly and sporty” and for me, this really shone through in the pictures:
As you can see, I liked the middle picture the most. I figured this was one of Thushara’s favourite poses / expressions as she had it in several other photos as well, and I felt it captured the essence of her persona (as I imagine her – I haven’t actually met the girl).
I got a very youthful, sunny vibe from Thushara’s photos, and so chose to play up the plumpness of her cheeks, and enlarged her forehead to bring out her “cuteness”.
As with Joel’s, I put the caricature in a frame with a cheery colour, so Laura could present it as a birthday gift:
By the way, Spongebob is a pretty great cartoon, so good on you Thushara!

Spongebob is the man ! Us fans need to motivate, get into politics and take over the world..!
