Manny is from Hawaii and got to know about drawmedrawme.com through our Facebook group! He wanted me to draw a colour caricature of him to put on his business card. I was really excited as this was my first overseas client, and also my first colour job.
(I also felt it was quite coincidental as my brother-in-law has just flown off to pursue his PhD at the University of Hawaii.)
As you can see, Manny has a chin butt, which I always derive endless pleasure from drawing :)
We had a little bit of a miscommunication. Manny wanted me to draw him handing the house keys over to the viewer. As I had taken this to be open to my interpretation, I decided to draw him handing one large key over, as such:
But it turned out he wanted it to be like that instead:
I felt reluctant to re-draw, as this would involve a substantial amount of re-working, which hadn’t been factored into the price. But Manny would rather forego the deposit than use the “big key” drawing.
In the end, I felt it would be quite a pity to abandon the project on such a sour note, so I re-drew it. And I’m glad, because I think the revised pose actually looks much better and conveys the intention better! Most importantly, Manny loves it as well.
